Leadership Violence Prevention: our girls identify Root Causes then educate their Peers to Raise Awareness, SPEAK It -Don't Keep It A Secret a youth led domestic violence awareness conference that was hosted by a group named "Young Women Informing Peers on Things They Need to Know" was a great success. GASA "Shining Stars" group ages 14 to 17 years old, wrote and received a grant to conduct a conference that addressed domestic violence among youth ages 12 to 24 years old. Utilizing the Community Action Model (CAM), an asset based model, which builds on the strengths or capacity of a community to create change from within. The conference was conducted on February 12, 2011. In total the advocates recruited 139 youth from all neighborhoods in the city of San Francisco. After an exhaustive recruiting effort, 77 youth and 12 adults attended the conference. In March 2011, the advocates the facilitated three classroom workshops utilizing the Speak It lesson plan for June Jordan School of Equity "Safe is Sexy Week" Health Promotion Conference where 72 youth ages 14-18 years old attended. In total 163 youth and adults awareness of the warning signs, traits, and resources around domestic violence increased.
Evaluation The advocates conducted an evaluation/ satisfaction form, which revealed the following: 95% stated that they were very satisfied with the topics presented. When measuring knowledge learned 85% could accurately name three elements of the following: warning signs, safety tips and types of domestic violence. Lastly, when asked what they liked the most some of the repeated answers were as follows: workshops were led by youth facilitators, alternative Saturday activity, prizes, learned how to stay safe and about healthy relationships.
